History of TalgarnoOne of the only books written about the history of Talgarno 'Doomed Talgarno' by W H Ferguson, explains what the town of Talgarno was like before the Hume Weir was developed, and the disgust that residents had with the governments of the time taking away from them land that was theirs. The book also explains in some detail the river as it was, industries of the town (cattle, sheep, pigs, mining, tobacco) the first settlers, details of families at the time, notable buildings such as churches, houses, bridges, the hall, pastimes of the residents (picnics, cricket & tennis), groups such as the Red Cross and the education on offer to the commuity. For more information on the history of Talgarno visit the history page and check out the links to the actual book displayed online at the State Library of Victoria. Our current communityTalgarno is a small country town of around 300 people (2006 Census) situated on the Berringa Peninsula of the Hume Weir in North East Victoria. The majority of our people in the workforce are in agriculture, but as we are only a 20 minute drive from Albury, Tallangatta or Wodonga we have a growing number of people commuting to work in many other industries such as manufacturing, construction, education and health. Almost a third of people living in Talgarno volunteer in some capacity for some group or organisation which goes to show the generosity, friendliness and community spirit of our people. The average age of residents is pushing 40 years of age, but this is steadily decreasing with more families moving into the area with young children. The Talgarno area is a great place for tourists, with many camping spots along the weir for a relaxing getaway, and the weir is renowned for being a great fishing, swimming and boating spot especially for families. There are many parks and reserves in close proximity giving great views over the many valleys around our area.
